He brought Trix coffee to the hospital the next morning—an Americano with just a splash of cream. Meanwhile, his was diluted with four sugars and several healthy splashes of cream.

“It’ll put hair on your chest,” he teased, handing it over as she got out of the car.

This gave him two things—one, it distracted her from the fact that he’d been lying in wait near where she liked to park for the last fifteen minutes and two, with her hands busy bringing the coffee to her mouth, he snagged her backpack from the passenger’s seat.

Her mouth opened on a sigh—caffeine-related, he thought, rather than the fact that he’d grabbed her heavy bag—and he took that as a victory.

“Just what I always needed,” she said, lips quirking. “More hair on my chest.”

He chuckled, shrugged on her backpack. “What do you have in here?”

“Is this where you fill in the blank with bricks?”

“I’ve got my dad jokes on point.”

Smiling, she slammed her door, walked alongside him into the hospital. “Do you want to be one?”

He paused, eyes slanting down to her. “Want to be what?”

“A dad,” she said, nudging him to the side and using her pass on the employee entrance.

“Thanks,” he murmured. “And yes, I do want to be a father. I thought for a long time I didn’t want to be, but . . . despite recent events, I think I’d be an okay one.”

She touched his arm. “You’ve always been great with kids.”

Not letting his behavior off the hook, but not sticking the knife in and twisting it. How had he been so blind to not realize how incredible she was?

Or maybe, like Trix had said, he’d known she was everything he wanted, but deep inside, he’d been too scared to truly accept that she was all of the things he’d wanted, and so he’d made up excuses to push her away, so he didn’t put himself out there.

Too deep for this early in the morning.

And yet, he’d thought about little else except what he’d been thinking three years ago, the untruths he’d held on to since then.

“What about you?” he asked as they made their way down the hall.

“I didn’t really think much about it for a long time,” she murmured. “But I’ve always pictured myself married and with kids someday.” Her eyes danced when she glanced up at him. “We’re getting older now, though, so I guess someday is getting closer.”

“True,” he teased and tugged the end of her ponytail. “I think I even see a few gray hairs in here.”

She smacked his hand away. “Rude.”

He snorted and their entrance to the break room was significantly less eventful than the previous day. He slipped her bag from his shoulders and passed it over.

“Thanks,” she said.

“No prob,” he said.

They stowed their things then stared at each other for a moment—a long, awkward moment.

“Well,” she eventually said, slipping off her sweatshirt and stashing it in her locker, “I’m going to go.”

He didn’t have anything smart or witty to say to that and so he settled on, “Yeah.
